Blackwater Rail Trail Historic Signs Tour, October 26th

IMG_20191026_145744953_HDR

We’d like to share a huge shout out to the community members who showed up to our Blackwater Rail Trail Historic Sign tour on October 26th. This tour was led by speaker, and sign collaborator, David Vago who provided animated narration and expansion on the signs and the histories they tell. Mr. Vago is a industrial and rail road historian who helped us put these signs together. We are very thankful for his collaboration on this project and his appearance for this event.

Six news signs were recently installed that expand on the industrial history of the Thomas-Coketon-Douglas area. These signs tell about coal mining operations, rail road catastrophes, stories of those who grew up here, and much, much more. They draw from a mix of industry records, archives, and first hand accounts of the area. They can be found along the rail grade trail that runs below Thomas, WV through Coketon and Douglas. Sign maps and brochures can be found along the trail.

More information on the signs and Tucker County Heritage can be found at this link, in our October 2019 newsletter, or by walking the rail grade from Thomas to Douglas, WV and seeing the signs in person. We will also be creating and uploading a virtual sign tour in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
