Friends of Blackwater spoke with Senator Manchin’s staffer in a video conference call on August 19th to gain his support in voting for the Extinction Prevention Act. This act would provide funding for some of North America’s most at-risk species for extinction. Some of these include 39 species of butterflies, 70% of freshwater mussels, 42 species of desert fish, and more. We addressed issues that were close to home here in West Virginia, stating the importance of the Candy Darter,
Cheat Mountain Salamander, freshwater mussels, and West Virginia Northern Flying Squirrel. Some of the “less-charismatic” species tend to get overlooked when it comes to funding, although they are no less important to the ecosystem. Click here to learn more about the act.
