Virginia Opossum
Didelphis virginiana
The Virginia or North American opossum is the only opossum found north of Mexico. Being a marsupial, they do not give birth the same way that we (humans) and other non-marsupial mammals do. Marsupials give birth to very small offspring that then make their way into the mother’s pouch, where they will be kept safe while they finish developing.
Virginia opossums eat a wide variety of foods; ranging from plants to amphibians, fish, and small mammals. They even eat ticks at an astounding rate of 5,000 per year!
